Once Upon A Time In America- Thriller Case Study

2 comments:

  1. You needed to focus your case study much more closely to the question which is:
An analysis of how Sergio Leone establishes and develops the thriller genre in the opening to Once Upon a Time in America.

Thus all aspects of mise-en-scene which you have analysed needed to be rooted to genre.

    1) Your slide on sound is interesting but your analysis wobbles when you mention the use of "God Bless America" at the end of the film "The Deer Hunter" also made by an Italian director. You should've have researched this film which is about the tragic consequences of the USA military catastrophe in Vietnam. Thus the darkening reality of The American dream.

    2) Slide 2 on character types is mainly focused though references to other thriller films which use similar generic archetypes would have strengthened. (See power point which includes references.

    3) Your references to the use of lighting and how the detectives emerge out of shadows is the strongest element of your case study.

    4) Camera angles are an element of film language thus not specific to any genre.

I suggest you begin to make inter textual references and that you endeavour to engage in independent research in order to make convincing and confident inter textual references.
